CHARACTER COUNTS PROGRAM EARNS ACCOLADE

Lincoln (Neb.) - Nov. 22, 1999 - The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has earned a listing in "The Templeton Guide: Colleges that Encourage Character Development." The listing acknowledges the university's emphasis of the Character Counts! program.

Character Counts! is a project of a nationwide coalition that seeks to fortify the lives of America's young people with consensus ethical values called the Six Pillars of Character. The values are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. As many as 123,000 Nebraska youths have benefited from the character program since its inception in Nebraska in 1996.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, under the leadership of Chancellor James Moeser, has promoted the Character Counts! program and ideals statewide through the cooperative extension program. Character Counts! is shared through 4-H groups, school classroom programs, day camps and one-on-one activities.

"We are pleased to be Nebraska's leader in the Character Counts! program because we see student character- building as part of our responsibility as we help students develop the leadership and citizenship skills needed for their success," Moeser said. "Character-building is an essential part of today's educational experience."

The Templeton Guide, released this month, lists 405 exemplary college programs, 50 college presidents and 100 in an Honor Roll for their commitment to inspiring students to lead ethical and civic-minded lives. The Guide is published by Templeton Foundation Press.
