RITA KEAN APPOINTED INTERIM DEAN OF NU COLLEGE

Lincoln (Neb.) - Dec. 21, 1999 - Rita Kean, professor and chair of the department of textiles, clothing and design in the College of Human Resources and Family Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has been appointed interim dean of the college effective Jan. 1.

The announcement was made by Irv Omtvedt, vice chancellor of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Rick Edwards, senior vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Kean (pronounced cane) takes over for retiring Dean Karen Craig. Kean will serve in the interim capacity until a new dean is selected and on board, Omtvedt said. Craig's retirement takes effect Dec. 31.

A native of White Plains, N.Y., Kean earned her doctorate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1984). She is a fellow of the International Textiles and Apparel Association and served as an American Council on Education Fellow at the University of Kansas during the 1997-98 academic year. Kean has co-chaired the senior vice chancellor for academic affairs' Faculty Liaison Task Force on Diversity since 1998.

The department of textiles and clothing design received this year's American Textiles Manufacturer Award for excellence in programming, and the department is the home of the International Quilt Study Center, the James Quilt Collection, the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery and the Textiles Testing Service.

"We are very pleased Dr. Kean is willing to accept this administrative appointment to ensure the programs in the College of Human Resources and Family Sciences continue to move forward during this transition period," Omtvedt said. "Dr. Kean is an effective administrator and has an ideal background to provide the visionary leadership needed."
