Lincoln (Neb.) - Aug. 20, 1999 - Thirty eighth- and ninth- grade students from across Nebraska spent July 12-16 on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus exploring their common interest in mathematics.
The Power Math Summer Camp covered a diverse range of topics, including modern coding theory, statistical concepts and applications, graph theory, logic, number theory, math in music and the fair division of property. Students were selected based on their exceptional mathematical interests and abilities.
Students spent six hours each day in class activities under the careful mentoring of graduate mathematics students Dan Augustyn and Theresa Strei, undergraduate mathematics major Lucas Sabalka, and Gordon Woodward, associate professor of mathematics and camp director.
Volleyball, basketball, ultimate frisbee, laser tag and logic games filled the evening hours. Funding for the camp came primarily from the College of Arts and Sciences at NU, with additional support from the department of mathematics and statistics, the Center for Science, Mathematics and Computer Education, and a registration fee of $80.
Woodward said student reactions to the event were excellent, and he was pleased to see such a strong representation from some of Nebraska's smaller towns. The event's backers are already making plans for the second annual camp next summer. Participants in the 1999 Power Math Camp, listed alphabetically by hometown:
