Lincoln (Neb.) - Aug. 27, 1999 - The University of Nebraska- Lincoln Teachers College seeks nominees for the 2000 Christa McAuliffe Prize.
The annual prize goes to a Nebraska elementary or secondary school teacher in memory of McAuliffe, the teacher-astronaut who died in the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger in January 1986. The recipient will be honored at a banquet in late January and receive a $1,000 stipend and a plaque.
Nominations must be postmarked by Oct. 30 and should be sent to Office of the Dean, Teachers College, P.O. Box 880234, 231 Mabel Lee Hall, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, NE 68588-0234.
Nomination packets should include:
- a letter of nomination that addresses how the nominee exemplifies the courage, commitment to excellence, creativity and ability to inspire that characterized McAuliffe;
- a resume of the nominee's professional experience and education;
- a statement from the nominee expressing his or her teaching philosophy;
- a statement from the nominee of the way in which he or she exemplifies McAuliffe's characteristics mentioned above; and
- up to eight letters of support from students, parents,
administrators, fellow teachers and community members.
