Lincoln (Neb.) - Sept. 27, 1999 - "The Biggest, the Best, the Last of the Century" is the theme for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's homecoming festivities slated for Oct. 3-9.
Traditional and brand-new activities will include a fun run, banner contest, Husker Howl skits and cheers, royalty elections, a motivational speaker, a "Tailgate on the Turf" universitywide pep rally, a homecoming dance and a "Come on Home" reception and carnival.
Homecoming week begins at 1 p.m. Oct. 3 with a 5,000-meter public fun run and walk on East Campus. Registration for the run begins at noon at the Burr-Fedde Residence Halls at 35th and Holdrege. Other events open to the public include:
- Speaker Juan Williams, at the Lied Center, 301 N. 12th St., at 7 p.m. Oct. 4. A writer and columnist for the Washington Post for for more than 20 years, Williams is the author of "The Eyes on the Prize: America's Civil Rights Years, 1954-1965." He has gained a national reputation as a political analyst and is a regular participant on the Fox News Channel. He can be seen every week on Fox News Sunday. His perspective on issues and examination of the gray in the black and white world of American race relations has been featured in several leading national magazines.
- "Come on Home" reception, hosted by the Nebraska Alumni Association at the Wick Alumni Center, 16th and R streets, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 8.
- Carnival on the Nebraska Union Plaza, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8
During the week, students compete in homecoming contests and activities in teams organized by residence hall floor, greek chapter or student organization divisions. The homecoming steering committee will award divisional homecoming championship trophies to the groups that score the most points through event participation in their division.
The homecoming king and queen lty will be announced during halftime of the Nebraska vs. Iowa State football game Oct. 9 at Memorial Stadium.
Homecoming is organized by the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska student government, the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources student advisory board, University Ambassadors, Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Association, the Residence Hall Association, the Student Foundation, the Student Alumni Association and the University Program Council. Sponsors include the University Bookstore, the NU Athletic Department, Pepsi, the Chancellor's Office, Fairbury Brand Hot Dogs, Gallup, KFRX Radio, Nebraska State Fairgrounds, NU Directions, Old Home Buns, Pella Windows, P.O. Pears, Settells Printing, Sprint, NU Housing, NU Mail and Distribution, NU Parking and Transit, and Weaver Potato Chip Co.

Oct. 7 - "Tailgate on the Turf," Memorial Stadium, 6-9 p.m. (NU students, faculty, staff), Tom Green headliner, "Husker Howl" finals, fireworks, Memorial Stadium.
Oct. 8 - "Go Big Red" day, everyone is encouraged to wear red to show Husker spirit; lawn displays, City Campus, all day; "Come on Home" reception. Wick Center, 4:30-6:30 p.m.; carnival, Nebraska Union Plaza, 5:30-7:30 p.m. (open to public); all- university homecoming dance, State Fair Park grandstand (NU students only), 9:30 p.m.-1 a.m.
