Lincoln (Neb.) - Sept. 9, 1999 - The first 1999-2000 Paul A. Olson Seminar in Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will examine Meriwether Lewis' role as naturalist in the 1804-06 Lewis and Clark expedition.
Gary Moulton, professor of history at NU and editor of "The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition," will present "The Botanical Collection of Meriwether Lewis" Sept. 15 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Great Plains Art Collection gallery, 215 Love Library. The seminar and a 3 p.m. reception in the gallery are free and open to the public.
Moulton's address will speak to Lewis' botanical training,
his collecting criteria, his plant preservation methods, his
labeling and initial identification of the specimens and his
abilities generally as a naturalist. Attention will also be given
to the location of the specimens today, particularly the recent
discovery of a previously unknown collection of expedition plants
at Kew Gardens near London.
