Lincoln (Neb.) - Sept. 7, 2000 - Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Edward J. Larson will give a public lecture Sept. 28 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Larson's address begins at 8 p.m. in the Nebraska Union Auditorium, 1400 R St.
Larson, Richard B. Russell professor of history and law at the University of Georgia, won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize in history for "Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America's Continuing Debate over Science and Religion." In his lecture, "The Scopes Trial in History and Folklore," Larson will draw from his examination of the Scopes trial and his research involving evolution, eugenics, creationism and similar issues.
"Summer for the Gods" provides a cultural history of the Scopes trial and the events leading up to it, retelling the case with facts, objectivity and context, instead of the romantic portrayals of other versions. Larson also examines evolution and creationism in "Trial and Error: The American Controversy over Creation and Evolution."
The lecture is sponsored at UNL by the College of Arts and Sciences,
the Math/Science Education Initiative, the Center for Science,
Mathematics and Computer Education, the Center for the Teaching and Study
of Applied Ethics, and the Humanities Center. For further information,
