Lincoln (Neb.) - Sept. 27, 2000 - Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Gardens at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is a recipient of a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services in Washington, D.C.
The grant award, for $112,500, is one of 177 announced Sept. 19 to "exemplary museums," according to the institute. The federal agency supports museums' general operating costs through the grant program because of its understanding that money for general operations is critical to museums. Decisions about how to spend the awards are made by the recipients. This year 823 museums applied for the grant funds. Most of the awards were around the $100,000 level.
The selection of the Sheldon for an award for the fourth time in 15 years points to an "important milestone in a museum's endeavor to achieve excellence," according to the institute.
Sheldon director Janice Driesbach said the award is good news because the grant expands the museum's resources, and because of the esteem that goes with being singled out for the award.
"We're thrilled to be awarded this grant, which is highly competitive and acknowledges the accomplishments of the Sheldon," Driesbach said. "IMLS grants are highly valued because they support museum general operations. The funds will be used in part to assist with collections management upgrades. They will also allow us to enhance our programs and the Sheldon's visibility. This represents an exciting opportunity to move ahead on our long-range goals."
