SPEAKER TO ADDRESS MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT

Lincoln (Neb.) - Oct. 19, 2000 - Kenneth W. Stein, the William E. Schatten professor of contemporary Middle Eastern history and Israeli studies at Emory University in Atlanta, will speak on "Middle East Conflict Resolution" at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 8 at the Nebraska Union Auditorium, 1401 R St.

Stein will address the status of Palestinian-Israeli negotiations and other Middle Eastern issues expected to confront the next U.S. president.

His peers in the United States and the Middle East consider Stein an expert in the history of modern Israel and of diplomacy of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Stein's scholarly publications include the recently published "Heroic Diplomacy: Sadat, Kissinger, Carter, Begin, and the Quest for Arab-Israeli Peace." Previously he wrote "Making Peace Between Arabs and Israelis: Lessons from Fifty Years of Negotiating Experiences," "The Blood of Abraham: Insights into the Middle East" with former President Jimmy Carter, and "The Land Question in Palestine, 1917-1939."

Since 1996 he has written the chapter on the "Arab-Israeli Peace Process," which appears in "Middle East Contemporary Survey." He has written more than 18 articles in scholarly journals that have focused on the origins of modern Israel, the Palestinian community, the Arab-Israeli peace process, and the modern Arab world.

The talk is sponsored by the Norman and Bernice Harris Center for Judaic Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at UNL.
