Lincoln (Neb.) - Oct. 27, 2000 - "Follow the Red Brick Road to Victory" is the theme for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's 90th Homecoming celebration, Oct. 29 through Nov. 4.
Homecoming events take place throughout the week with popular contests and events such as Party on the Paint, fun run/walk, lawn display and banner contests, Husker Howl skits and cheers, royalty elections, and an all-campus pep rally.
Homecoming week begins with a 5K fun run and walk starting at the Burr-Fedde Building on East Campus at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29. Registration is prior to the run/walk from noon to 1 p.m. The event is open to the public. Entry forms are available at the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska student government office, 115 Nebraska Union.
Beginning at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Coliseum, the public is invited to attend "The Global Rhythm Tour" cultural event. The audience will be asked to participate in this interactive event of "rhythmic consciousness" with provided drums and percussion instruments. Artists Paulo and Ninaya Mattioli are dedicated to promoting community, creativity and raising global consciousness through rhythm. Paulo Mattioli is a world-renowned percussionist, educator and instrument designer. He has performed with major artists such as Kenny Loggins and Sting, and has recorded with the world's top African drummers. Ninaya Mattioli brings her gift of visualization and healing to the "Rhythm Journey." She has studied with many holistic masters in the fields of movement, massage, yoga and natural health.
The public is also invited to "Tailgate II: Party on the Paint," Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Special guest actor and comedian David Spade, star of television's "Just Shoot Me" and formerly of "Saturday Night Live" and numerous movies, will perform. Tickets are available through the Nebraska Union Ticketmaster. NU student tickets are $12.50 with ID and public tickets are $16.75.
On Nov. 4, the public can enjoy a tailgate party at the Nebraska Union Plaza prior to the Nebraska vs. Kansas football game. Entertainment will be provided by the NU Yell Squad, Scarlet and Cream Singers, Herbie and Lil'Red, and the royalty candidates. Lawn displays on City Campus will be available for viewing Nov. 3 and 4.
Students compete in Homecoming contests and activities in teams organized by residence hall floor, greek chapter or student organization divisions. The Homecoming steering committee will award divisional championship trophies to the groups that score the most points during the week. Contest results will be announced at the tailgate party, and division champion and royalty winners will be announced during halftime of the football game.
Homecoming is organized by the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska student government, the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Student Advisory Board, University Ambassadors, Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Association, the Residence Hall Association, the Student Foundation, the Student Alumni Association and the University Program Council.
