Lincoln (Neb.) - April 18, 2001 - The Nebraska Alumni Association will recognize three Distinguished Service Award winners May 5 during spring commencement exercises at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The awards are part of a universitywide celebration to salute alumni achievement.
Distinguished Service Awards honor individuals with exemplary records of service to the Nebraska Alumni Association or one of its college alumni associations.
This year's recipients are Steve Hauff of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Don Moeller of Golden, Colo.; and Paul Swanson of Redlands, Calif.
Hauff is the president and treasurer of Dakota Sports Inc., a company he founded in 1970. Since graduating from NU with a bachelor's in business administration in 1965 and an MBA in 1967, Hauff has been active in the university alumni association. A past president of the Nebraska Alumni Association Board of Directors, he is also an active community volunteer. He has worked with the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce on its Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Recreation Board. He also has helped coordinate the annual Howard Wood Dakota Relays for more than 25 years.
Although not an NU graduate, Moeller has served the university and its alumni association for many years. He has been an active board member of the Coloradans for Nebraska alumni chapter since 1991 and served as the group's president in 1997-98. Under his leadership, the chapter has coordinated many programs to promote the university, including scholarship funds, student recruitment receptions and fund-raisers to support local broadcasts of Husker games. He and his wife are ardent supporters of the Alumni Association's Scarlet and Cream Singers, often hosting the group in their home or traveling several hundred miles to see a performance.
Swanson, a retired dentist, has been a member of the Californians for
Nebraska chapter since 1963 and served as the group's president from
1994-96. As president, Swanson coordinated two successful Founders' Day
banquets and athletic migrations to Lincoln. He also continued funding
efforts to keep Husker football broadcasts on the air in the Los Angeles
area and support university scholarships. Swanson is a member of the
national board of directors for the Nebraska Alumni Association. A 1958
dental graduate, he and his wife have supported the College of Dentistry
for 35 years and have attended many of the college's annual reunions.
