Lincoln (Neb.) - Sept. 11, 2001 - University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Harvey Perlman issued the following statement to university faculty, staff and students this morning:
"This is a time of shock, distress, and great sadness for all members of the university community. At UNL, classes will continue as scheduled; however, I ask all instructors to be sympathetic to students who, because of particular distress, feel unable to attend class. University offices will remain open, but I ask all supervisors to be sensitive to employees who feel they cannot continue their work. This is a time for the entire university community to come together with compassion and understanding.
"At this time of national tragedy, I ask that we all keep the victims of these horrible acts in our thoughts and prayers."
Perlman said he and other UNL officials continue to monitor the situation. As of noon, the university has taken the following steps:
- made support counseling available for faculty, staff and students
- heightened security awareness on campus
- granted administrative leave for employees wanting to donate blood.
