NU HOMECOMING KING AND QUEEN NAMED SATURDAY

Lincoln (Neb.) - Oct. 20, 2001 - Emily Hurd, a senior from Papillion, and Victor Martinez, a senior from Hershey, were crowned the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's homecoming king and queen at halftime of the Nebraska vs. Texas Tech football game Oct. 20. Hurd and Martinez were elected in a vote of the UNL student body.

Hurd is the daughter of Joseph and Judith Hurd of Papillion. An advertising major in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, she a member of the Innocents Society, Kappa Tau Alpha National Journalism Honor Society and the UNL Honors Program. Her campus activities include cheerleading captain of the UNL spirit squad, vice-president of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority and teaching assistant for the Emerging Leaders class. Hurd's off-campus activities include volunteering at Riley Elementary School, an advertising internship at Hill Holliday, and the Nebraska at Oxford study-abroad program. She earned a Regent's Scholarship, a UNL Foundation Scholarship and the Betty Klingel Knicely Memorial Scholarship in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Martinez is the son of Ralph and Genevieve Martinez of Hershey. An international business major in the College of Business administration, he is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and National Society of Collegiate Scholars. His campus activities include the UNL Spirit Squad, Chi Phi fraternity, and the Mexican American Student Association. Martinez's off-campus activities include Big Brothers and Big Sisters Foundation. He earned the Benjamin J. Marshall Memorial Scholarship, UNL Spirit Squad Scholarship, and the Mockett Memorial Scholarship.
