REGIONAL PROGRAMMING CONTEST NOV. 10 AT UNL

Lincoln (Neb.) - Oct. 31, 2001 - The University of Nebraska-Lincoln department of computer science and engineering will play host to the 2001 Association for Computing Machinery regional programming contest Nov. 10 in Ferguson Hall on City Campus.

The contest is open to undergraduate students at any degree-granting institution in the ACM north central North America region, comprised of Iowa, Kansas, Manitoba, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, western Ontario, South Dakota and Wisconsin. ACM chapters can send one or two teams to participate in the contest. Lodging, food, parking and souvenirs will be provided free of charge to teams coming from outside the Lincoln area.

Prizes will be given by ACM to the regional winners. Local prizes for the top three teams include trophies and software courtesy of Internet Nebraska. Also to be awarded are scholarships and assistantships in UNL's computer science and engineering department graduate program, and the J.D. Edwards Honors Program in Computer Science and Management.

The winning teams will advance to the world finals March 20-24 in Honolulu.

On Nov. 11, in conjunction with the contest, a workshop will be held with the topic "Secure Distributed Information and Bioinformatics Research Laboratories." The workshop is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research. Attendees are invited to submit a 100-word abstract or poster by Nov. 7. Prizes will be given for the best posters. Workshop registration is free, but the number of seats is limited. Honorariums and awards are available for early registrants and poster presenters. Lunch will be provided.
