ZOOLOGIST TO DISCUSS 'SHIFTING MAMMALS' IN GREAT PLAINS

Lincoln (Neb.) - Nov. 8, 2001 - A recent survey of mammals in Nebraska showed that about one-third of the state's mammal species have shifted their population areas substantially since earlier studies in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Patricia Freeman, professor and curator of zoology at the University of Nebraska State Museum, will discuss those shifts Nov. 14 in the next Paul A. Olson Seminar in Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Freeman's presentation, "Shifting Mammals at the Great Plains Cross Roads," will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Great Plains Art Collection in the Christlieb Gallery, 1155 Q St. The seminar and a 3 p.m. reception in the gallery are free and open to the public.

Nebraska is situated geographically where eastern and western species come together, and where northern and southern species meet. Freeman will discuss how the shifts in distribution probably reflect environmental and agricultural changes in the state and the country, particularly along river systems.
