Lincoln (Neb.) - Nov. 21, 2001 - For the sixth time in eight years, a team of students from the University of Nebraska College of Law has advanced to the final rounds of the National Moot Court Competition in New York City.
A Nebraska team of Michelle Paxton Anderson of Lincoln, Robb N. Gage of Omaha and Andrew Smith of Axtell took first place in the regional rounds of the competition Nov. 15-16 at the University of Arkansas Law School in Fayetteville, defeating teams from the University of Missouri-Columbia, Washburn University, University of Kansas and Arkansas-Fayetteville. Anderson, a graduate of Hastings College, won the American College of Trial Lawyers silver bowl as the best oral advocate in the final round of competition.
Another Nebraska team of Joseph Bowman of Lincoln, Jon Amir Hatemi of Valencia, Calif., and Michele Lewon of Sioux City, Iowa, were undefeated in two preliminary rounds of the regional competition, but lost in the quarterfinals by a narrow margin to a team from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
Anderson, Gage and Smith will join students from 27 other law schools in the national finals the week of Jan. 28.
The Young Lawyers Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City
of New York and the American College of Trial Lawyers sponsor the
competition. This year's competition focused on two legal issues
involving the power of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to
pursue claims of employment discrimination.
