Lincoln, Neb., June 26, 2002 -- An independent feature film is set to begin five weeks of filming in Lincoln July 8. Its producer/editor is Sharon Teo, an assistant professor in film and new media production at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
With the working titles "Breeders" or "The Family Room," the film tells the story of a gay man who is tired of always being different. He is transported back in time to when he was in high school but the world is now gay. To be straight is considered deviant behavior. Then something happens... he falls in love with a woman.
Though the script has a mature theme, Teo says it is meant to have a broad appeal. "It's not just a gay story," she said. "It's a story about differences and accepting one's differences."
The film will cast more than 100 actors -- Lincoln community members and UNL faculty and students. Andrew Keitch of Philadelphia will play the lead role of "Brad." Location shoots are scheduled at Lincoln High School, various homes in Lincoln area and UNL's East Campus.
Teo said she wanted to spotlight Nebraska. "It's beautiful out here and I want to show that, because people have a lot of misconceptions about Nebraska," said Teo, who earned her bachelor's degree at the University of Texas in Austin and a master of fine arts degree at Ohio State University in Columbus.
The film will premier in summer or fall 2003 at the new Mary Riepma Ross Film Theater, under construction at 13th and R streets on UNL's City Campus.
Teo has produced several projects for PBS, winning a regional Emmy and Bronze Telly for the documentary "Wandering Souls: Tet '68 Remembered." "Breeders" is in collaboration with screenwriter/director Marc Moody, an assistant professor in film studies and video production at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa.
