Lincoln, Neb., Aug, 5, 2002 -- The Sheldon Art Gallery docent course at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will be held at the Steinhart Room in the Lied Center for Performing Arts, 301 N. 12th St., beginning Aug. 26. The course will meet every Monday and Wednesday through September from 9 a.m. to noon (except Labor Day, Sept. 2).
Because the Sheldon Gallery is under renovation, the sessions will focus on the outdoor sculpture collection. Additional monthly sessions will be held throughout the school year.
Anyone who would like to learn about Sheldon and who can provide informational tours to students and adults is welcome to apply. Docents must have a commitment to education in the visual arts, enthusiasm about working with people of all ages, and time to volunteer. The course assists volunteers in becoming knowledgeable about the wide variety of artworks in Sheldon's collection, and provides information and materials for applicants to become proficient in touring skills, so no special background or expertise is required.
Following the course, the docent program requires a minimum commitment of one morning per week throughout the school year. Primary beneficiaries of the docent-led tours are Lincoln Public Schools elementary students who visit Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings throughout the school year. Many additional tour groups are scheduled for afternoons and other days.
The Sheldon Docent Program, beginning its 39th year, has an annual enrollment of approximately 65. The program allows people from all segments of the community who share a commitment to the arts to volunteer their time.
