New York Times Columnist Friedman Kicks Off Thompson Forum Sept. 23

Where: Lied Center for Performing Arts, 12th and Q Streets

Lincoln, Neb., Sept. 19, 2002 -- The University of Nebraska-Lincoln E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues will begin its 2002-2003 season with a lecture presented by Thomas Friedman, foreign affairs columnist for "The New York Times." His talk titled "The Middle East and American Foreign Policy" begins at 8 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. Admission is free. No tickets are required.

Friedman, a three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, most recently won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for commentary and has authored a new book, "Longitudes and Attitudes: Exploring the World After September 11."

The event will be streamed live at www.unl.edu, and carried live on KRNU radio 90.3 FM, campus channel 4, and Time Warner Cable channel 21 in Lincoln. It will be rebroadcast on NEBSAT channel 106 at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 24 to educational sites across Nebraska.

The E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues has been bringing international speakers to the UNL campus for 15 years, including former Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev, 1986 Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The forum is a cooperative project between the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Cooper Foundation.

The Friedman lecture is co-sponsored by the Nebraska Humanities Council, the University of Nebraska President's office, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor's office, Lied Center for Performing Arts and is the seventh annual Governor's Lecture in the Humanities.
