Lincoln, Neb., Sept. 25, 2002 -- Former University of Nebraska-Lincoln administrator Joan Leitzel, who retired in June after six years as president of the University of New Hampshire, will be the first Robert L. Egbert distinguished visiting lecturer in the UNL Teachers College.

During the week of Oct. 7, Leitzel will lecture, present a colloquium and meet with several groups of faculty and students to share her knowledge of the higher education scene.

On Oct. 9, she will lecture at 9:30 a.m. in 128 Mabel Lee Hall to on-campus and distance education students in the higher education graduate program in the department of educational administration. Her lecture focuses on today's higher education environment and the role of the presidency in the university setting.

A mathematician who served on the math faculty and as an administrator at Ohio State University for 25 years before moving on to the National Science Foundation and Nebraska, Leitzel will present a colloquium to the department of mathematics at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 10 in 205 Oldfather Hall titled "Issues in Higher Education Pertaining to Mathematics."

The Oct. 9 lecture and Oct. 10 colloquium are both free and open to the public.

Leitzel served as senior vice chancellor for academic affairs at UNL from 1992 until she left for New Hampshire in 1996. During her tenure at Nebraska, she also served as interim chancellor from August 1995 to February 1996 between the terms of Graham Spanier and James Moeser. While she was interim chancellor, the acting senior vice chancellor for academic affairs was Harvey Perlman, now the UNL chancellor.

The Egbert distinguished visiting lecturer program is named in honor of the former Teachers College dean and long-time faculty member in curriculum and instruction who died last September.
