Cather Circle to Explore Diversity Thursday and Friday

Lincoln, Neb., Oct 9, 2002--Diversity and multiculturalism in the United States and abroad will be the focus of the fall Cather Circle Oct. 10-11 on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. Sponsored by the Nebraska Alumni Association, the Cather Circle is a prestigious mentoring program for outstanding women students and distinguished alumnae of UNL.

Veretta Garrison will give the keynote address in the Wick Alumni Center, 1520 R St., at 10 a.m. Oct. 10. Garrison is chief executive officer of Garrison Brown Spencer Consulting Services, a firm that specializes in multicultural communications, in New Haven, Conn. As a certified administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory, Garrison also develops and conducts intercultural training for organizations, corporations and universities in domestic and global diversity.

A linguist by training, Garrison studied at the Dolmetscher Institut Heidelberg, Germany, and participated in a graduate linguistics program at the University of Wisconsin and an intercultural relations program at Antioch University and the Intercultural Communications Institute. Garrison is working on a book titled "The Myth of the Melting Pot."

Robert Hitchcock, NU professor of anthropology and coordinator of African studies, will also explore the diversity theme in a presentation. Karen Blessen, a member of the Cather Circle and a Pulitzer Prize-winning illustrator, will share stories of her trip to Africa with Save the Children.

Since its inception in 1999, the Cather Circle has grown to include more than 130 women mentors from across the country and 70 successful female students. In addition to discussion sessions and networking, Cather Circle members will have the opportunity to attend the Oct. 12 football game against Missouri.
