UNL Botanical Garden & Arboretum Announces Photo Contest Winners

Lincoln, Neb., Oct. 24, 2002--The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Botanical Garden and Arboretum has announced the winners of its 2002 Garden Photo Contest.

More than 40 photos were submitted to the contest and there were both adult and junior divisions of amateur photographers shooting black-and-white eight-by-10 photographs of the UNL landscape in four categories: spring, summer, fall and winter.

Both top photographs in the adult and junior divisions were taken in Maxwell Arboretum on East Campus. Harlan Heald of Lincoln won first place in the winter category and best of show "Fo otbridge," while 4-year-old Aaron Stoddard of Lincoln won first place in the summer category junior division for "G azebo Shadows at Noon." Other category winners, all from Lincoln, were:

Spring--1, Mary Shipman, "Viburnum 'Wentworth'"; 2, Dominque Ellis, "Bumblebee Dance"; 3, Shipman, "Viburnum"; honorable mention, Heather Luehring, "Statuesque."

Summer--1, Ellis, "A Lily of a Time"; 2, Karyn Maxey, "I'll Help You Up"; 3, Crystal Corman, "Ripples"; honorable mention, Ramendra Nath Saha, "Victor"; junior division, Stoddard, "Gazebo Shadows at Noon."

Fall--1, Nath Saha, "Fallen Soul"; 2, Heald, "Architecture Hall"; 3, Ellis, "Leafy Blanket."

Winter--1, Heald, "Footbridge" (best of show); 2, Heald, "Winter Stems"; 3, Marcia Claesson, "Snowdrops."

The contest prizes were provided by Lincoln businesses: The Photo Shoppe, Lee Booksellers, Dick Blick Art Materials and the Photo Factory. The judges were Don McKibben, D. J. Hogan and Larry J. Wells of the Lincoln Camera Club.

A "2003 Campus Landscape Calendar," made possible by the UNL Garden Friends, has been created from the winning photos. For more information, call UNL Landscape Services at 472-2679. The Garden Friends, a group of landscape garden enthusiasts, provide support and encouragement for the goals and projects of the Botanical Garden and Arboretum, and serve as ambassadors by raising awareness of the Botanical Garden and Arboretum's significance to the people of Nebraska.
