People of Color in Predominantly White Institutions Conference Is Nov. 6-7

Lincoln, Neb., Oct. 28, 2002--The seventh annual People of Color in Predominantly White Institutions conference will be Nov. 6-7 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Clifford Hardin Nebraska Center for Continuing Education, 33rd and Holdrege streets.

This year's conference will again focus on recruitment and retention of students, faculty and staff of color in three keynote addresses, an invited panel discussion, five other panel discussions and workshops, and 34 concurrent sessions.

The Nov. 6 agenda includes two keynote addresses: "Achieving Access and Success in Higher Education" by Frank W. Hale Jr., vice provost and professor emeritus at Ohio State University, at 8:45 a.m.; and "What You Need to Know to Recruit and Retain Students of Color" by Lana Low, senior executive for Noel-Levitz, an international consulting firm for enrollment management, at 10 a.m. In addition, Jose Soto, vice president for affirmative action/equity/diversity at Southeast Community College, will deliver a noon luncheon address, "Recruitment and Retention of Students, Faculty and Staff of Color in Community Colleges."

The second day's agenda features a 10 a.m. invited panel discussion, "Moving Upstream: Voices of Asian Americans in Higher Education," and noon luncheon keynote address by Janet Murguia, executive vice chancellor for university relations at the University of Kansas, "Recruitment and Retention of Students, Faculty and Staff of Color."

Since its introduction in 1996, the interdisciplinary program has grown in both stature and in reputation and is now considered to be one of the premier conferences of its kind in the United States. It has featured nationally known keynote speakers, while faculty, staff, administrators and students from throughout the United States and Canada have participated in the event.
