Lincoln, Neb., Nov. 7, 2002--Judith Winston, former general counsel to and undersecretary for the U.S. Department of Education, will deliver a public lecture Nov. 13 at the University of Nebraska College of Law titled "Equal Educational Opportunities: The Implications for Rural Education."
The lecture begins at noon in Room 125 of Ross McCollum Hall, East Campus Loop and Fair Street.
As general counsel, Winston interpreted laws affecting department operations, drafted and reviewed regulations and legislation, represented the department in litigation and advised the secretary on policy issues. She also worked with the secretary and the deputy secretary on strategic initiatives that helped define a broad, coherent vision for achieving the department's national education goals and the secretary's priorities.
Winston also served as executive director of President Clinton's Initiative on Race.
She joined the research faculty of the American University College of Law in Washington, D.C., in the 2001-02 academic year to develop a project on race and education. She practices law in Washington.
