Lincoln, Neb., March 18, 2003--The University of Nebraska-Lincoln PREVENT student organization and the Rape/Spouse Abuse Crisis Center are requesting donations of new and used shoes for the project "Try Walking in These Shoes," which will be on display April 5-30 at Westfield Shoppingtown Gateway, 61st and O streets. Each pair of shoes in the mall window display will represent a sexual assault victim who visited the Rape/Spouse Abuse Crisis Center or suffered in silence during the past year.
Organizers say sexual assault can be an obscure topic to deal with and to address, and while people may realize that it happens in the community, they often struggle with ways to respond to the issue. The sponsoring groups hope the display, presented during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, will encourage community members to get involved in sexual assault awareness.
Individuals, offices and organizations are encouraged to donate new or slightly used shoes of any type or size through March 31 at the following locations:
* Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 3825 Wildbriar Lane, (402) 423-7639
* Hispanic Community Center, 2300 O St., (402) 474-3950
* Student Involvement, 200 Nebraska Union, 1400 R St., (402) 472-8137
* Rape/Spouse Abuse Crisis Center, 2545 N St., (402) 476-2110
All shoes will be donated to community organizations and agencies in Lincoln after the display ends.
