UNL to Celebrate GLBT History Month with Film, Facts, Dinner

Lincoln, Neb., Sept. 30, 2003 -- The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will celebrate October's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender History Month with a series of events designed to educate the campus and community about GLBT issues and history.

On Oct. 8, there will be a special showing of the film Brother, Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St. Known as the "American Gandhi," Rustin is credited with shaping Martin Luther King Jr. into an international symbol of non-violence and with organizing the 1963 March on Washington. According to the discussion guide for the film, available on the Student Involvement Web site, "Despite these achievements, Rustin was silenced, threatened and fired from leadership positions - sometimes because of his uncompromising political beliefs, but more often because he was an openly gay man in a fiercely homophobic era."

A monthlong display of historical events by other GLBT people will be placed in the Nebraska Union outside of the Rotunda Gallery and on the Student Involvement Web site. On Oct. 30, Student Involvement's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Ally programs and the recognized student organization Spectrum will have a GLBT History Month Celebration Dinner at 6 p.m. in the Culture Center, 333 N. 14th St. Tickets for the dinner will be on sale for $15 beginning Oct. 6 in the Student Involvement office, 200 Nebraska Union.

Other events include a combined celebration of National Coming Out Week with the Omaha GLBT community, a Spectrum Open House on Oct. 7, and a "read-in" of GLBT authors in the Union Square lounge of the Nebraska Union from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 30.
