Lincoln, Neb., Oct. 3, 2003 -- Elizabeth Green, a senior from Lincoln attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has received a national Barry Goldwater Scholarship awarded to outstanding undergraduates majoring in science, engineering or mathematics.
Green, who graduated in 2000 from Millard North High School, is double-majoring in mathematics and meteorology-climatology. She plans to graduate in May 2004.
She is one of 300 students nationwide who received a Goldwater Scholarship out of 1,093 applicants. Of the 300 winners, 31 are mathematics majors.
The one- and two-year scholarships will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. Recipients are chosen based on academic merit and are nominated by their academic institutions.
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation is a federally endowed agency established by Congress in 1986. It honors the late U.S. Sen. Barry Goldwater (R-Ariz.), and is designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields.
Green is the 18th UNL student, and 16th math major, to win a Goldwater Scholarship since the program's inception.
