Lincoln, Neb., Oct. 31, 2003 -- More than 150 high school students from eastern Nebraska are expected to take part in Economics Day for Students Nov. 5 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Presented by the Center for Economic Education in the UNL College of Business Administration, the program will introduce students to the field of economics as well as the campus experience at the university and the college. Instilling an understanding of the day-to-day use of basic economic principles is a major goal of this workshop.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon in the Centennial Room of the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St. where students will participate in break-out sessions with university faculty.
Professor Craig MacPhee will encourage the students to think about balance of payments concepts with a "rubles for Snickers" exchange.
Notables who have majored in economics will be the subject of Professor John Anderson's sessions. Among the names the students will recognize are business leaders such as Meg Whitman of e-bay Technologies, presidents such as Ronald Reagan, governors such as governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger, and celebrities such as Tiger Woods and Mick Jagger.
Professor Sam Allgood will discuss the competitive vs. cooperative strategies of personal gain as seen through the eyes of John Nash in the movie "A Beautiful Mind."
Students and teachers will come prepared with questions on economic issues of particular interest to them for faculty to answer as part of the discussion sessions.
Co-sponsors include the UNL Department of Economics and the Office of Admissions.
