Lincoln, Neb., Nov. 11, 2003 -- The University Health Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln recently purchased state-of-the-art X-ray equipment, with a Computed Radiology System for the radiology department.
Computed radiography is designed to enable the transition of general radiology from analogue to digital. UHC also purchased the Picture Archiving Communications System, which allows images to be viewed, retrieved and stored electronically. Images are available immediately for the medical providers in the clinic and also the Athletics Department. If a student is seeing a medical provider outside of the UHC, a CD of the exam will be made for the student to take with them. All exams are sent immediately, using the PACS, to a consulting radiologist for interpretation. The reading is then sent over telephone lines to the UHC for transcribing. By using the PACS, the medical providers can quickly receive X-ray reports on each patient.
The implementation of the new Computed Radiology System has improved efficiency and has enhanced the productivity of the Radiology Department, housed in Room 158 of the University Health Center. It provides immediate access to images, a reduction in repeat rate/radiation exposure to patients and decreased time for retrieval of films. Since the department is now filmless, tanks of developer, fixer and wash chemicals are no longer needed which eliminates the possibility of coming into contact with hazardous materials.
All of these changes have assisted the UHC medical staff in providing the highest quality care to UNL students. The Radiology Department is staffed with licensed radiologic technologists. The hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays and holidays from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. An order for an X-ray is needed from a medical provider at the UHC or a student's personal medical provider. Students are charged discounted rates for exams performed at the UHC. UNL employees with an X-ray order from their own medical provider can call (402) 472-7455 to make an appointment for an X-ray. The department is a Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO provider.
