Big 12 Alamo Bowl Budget Covers Nebraska Expenses

Lincoln, Neb., Dec. 18, 2003 -- The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is finalizing arrangements for participating in the 2003 Alamo Bowl game in San Antonio, Texas. The Nebraska vs. Michigan State contest will be broadcast to a national ESPN audience at 8 p.m. central time on Dec. 29.

The Big 12 Conference contract with the Alamo Bowl calls for each participating school to send its team, coaches, band and yell squad. Participation by selected university representatives at game-related events is required by the bowl contract. Members of the official party are university officials whose expenses are paid for by the Big 12 payout from the Alamo Bowl.

Expenses related to the bowl game and associated events are covered under the contract. Although the contract has not been finalized, a working agreement indicates that Nebraska will receive approximately $1.1 million to cover the cost of participation.

"Anticipating finalization of the contract, we have constructed a working budget that covers the travel and participation costs of the groups expected by the Alamo Bowl Committee to attend the game and its functions. The budget is within the Big 12 allocation," said Christine Jackson, UNL vice chancellor for business and finance.

"The university is contractually obligated to make bonus payments to coaches based on participation. By controlling expenses to the approved budget, the university will be able to fulfill those obligations out of the Alamo Bowl expense allotment."

The coaches' bonuses are as follows: Frank Solich $24,584, Bo Pelini $16,667, Tim Albin $10,000, Ron Brown $10,000, Barney Cotton $10,833, Scott Downing $8,750, Turner Gill $10,833, Jeff Jamrog $10,000, Marvin Sanders $8,333 and Jimmy Williams $8,333. UNL representatives traveling to the Alamo Bowl include the following groups: football team, coaches and athletic staff and their families, band, yell squad, and official university representatives.
