ENGINEERING INTERNS ON NU CAMPUS THIS WEEK

Lincoln (Neb.) - July 14, 1998 - Twenty-four students and three teachers from area high schools have received internships with engineering research centers at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln.

The interns are spending July 12-17 with center researchers learning about lasers, computers, electronic materials, the infrastructure, the environment and nontraditional manufacturing.

Each student intern receives a fellowship that includes room and board at the university and an honorarium of $250. Teachers receive honorariums of $750. The student interns were selected from 135 applicants.

Activities planned for the interns include creating World Wide Web pages, laser micro-machining, studying the engineering of sails and wings, helping with an automotive crash test, studying atmospheric trace gases, and laser-based rapid prototyping.

This is the sixth year the engineering research centers have offered the internships. The centers were created in 1988 with funding from the state legislature's Nebraska Research Initiative program. The centers were created to conduct research applicable to state industry, accelerate the flow of technology form laboratories to users, and promote economic development in Nebraska.

The teacher-interns are Wendy Citta of Sutherland High School, Mary Hough of Omaha's Duchesne Academy and Jeff Wing of North Platte St. Patrick High School. The teachers will spend time in each of the six centers.

A list of the 24 student interns and the engineering research centers where they have internships follows. (High school names are listed only if different from or in addition to the hometown.)
