BIG RED WELCOME IS AUG. 23 AT NU

Lincoln (Neb.) - Aug. 18, 1998 - New students will be welcomed to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with campus tours, discussion on what it means to be a university student and a festival with free food and music at the annual Big Red Welcome event Aug. 23.

At 11:30 a.m., students enrolled in the University Honors Program and University Foundations Program will meet in the Lied Center for Performing Arts, 301 N. 12th St., to participate in a summer reading assignment program. During the summer, these students read "Snow Falling on Cedars," by David Guterson. After the program, small groups of students will discuss the book with faculty members.

From 1:30 to 3 p.m., class schedule tours will depart from the front steps of the Nebraska Union, 14th and R streets. New students should bring their class schedules to the tours.

At 2:30 p.m., commuter students will meet in the Wick Alumni Center, 16th and R streets, to participate in a question-and- answer session with new students.

At 4 p.m., all new students are invited to attend the New Student Convocation in the Lied Center. Speakers include Bill McLaughlin, recipient of the Outstanding Educator Award and visiting professor of chemistry; Chancellor James Moeser; and Sara Russell, Association of Students of the University of Nebraska student government president. The Cornhusker Marching Band also will perform.

A welcome festival and picnic with free food and soft drinks begins at 5 p.m. on R Street between 12th and 14th streets. University departments, student organizations and local businesses will give away items and there will be performances by the NU Yell Squad, the Scarlets and Lil' Red. The festival concludes with a 7 p.m. concert by Sugarhill Gang, sponsored by the University Program Council.
