Lincoln (Neb.) - Aug. 31, 1998 - Recent University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate Alison Knudsen is one of 20 young people nationwide chosen for the Human Rights Campaign Youth College.
The Human Rights Campaign, with more than 200,000 members, is the country's largest national lesbian and gay political organization. As part of the organizaions program, Knudsen, a 1992 Fremont High School graduate, will undergo intensive campaign training August 17-21 in Washington, D.C. before heading to Sante Fe, N.M., to work on Tom Udall's campaign for Congress.
"I feel like the gay and lesbian community can make great strides through the political system," Knudsen said, "One of the most effective tools for fighting bigotry is the political system and by participating, I can help get a gay-friendly representative elected."
While at the the university, Knudsen was president of the
Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Resource Center, worked to
educate the community about gay issues, and testified at the
Nebraska Legislature on same-sex marriage and hate crimes
legislation. Knudsen was a women's studies major.
