SCHOOL VIOLENCE IS TOPIC OF STATEWIDE WORKSHOP

Lincoln (Neb.) - Sept. 22, 1997 - Handling violence in our schools will be the focus of a seminar this month in Lincoln and transmitted via live interactive television to 12 other sites around the state.

"Emergency Procedures: A 'Violent Crisis' Simulation Workshop for School Building Administrative Teams and Law Enforcement Officers" will run from 9 a.m. to noon (CDT) Sept. 23 and repeated during the same hours Sept. 30. Interactive television will permit participants at each site to interact with those at other sites. A discussion leader familiar with the training will be at each remote site.

The workshop was conducted in Lincoln only the last few years but expanded to cover the entire state with sponsorship from the U.S. Attorney's Office in Omaha and the Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island with help from the Lincoln Police Department, the Nebraska Department of Education and the Nebraska Council of School Administrators.

The purpose of the workshop, said Reece Peterson, associate professor of special education and communication disorders at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is to help school administrative teams and local law enforcement agencies better prepare for emergencies that could develop in schools. He said advanced planning could prevent or minimize injury, death and property damage.

The 12 remote sites for the workshop are the Ainsworth Public Library, Beatrice State Development Center, Columbus Public Library, College Park in Grand Island, Hastings Public Library, Kearney Public Library, Lincoln Executive Building (521 S. 14th St., Suite 103), Peru State College Technology Center in Nebraska City, Northeast Community College in Norfolk (MaClay Building, Room 122), McKinley Education Center in North Platte, Omaha State Office Building (1313 Farnham on the Mall, third floor) and the Panhandle Education Center in Scottsbluff.
