Lincoln (Neb.) - Sept. 18, 1998 - Alicia Santos has been named the associate director of the Affirmative Action and Diversity Office at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She began her new position Sept. 14.
As associate director, Santos will investigate the bulk of internal discrimination cases, write the affirmative action plan, monitor job searches and train search committees to comply with equal opportunity standards.
Before joining the university, Santos had been a personnel attorney for the Nebraska Department of Revenue since 1983. There, she investigated discrimination and harassment grievances, helped develop affirmative action plans and conducted educational programs on diversity, discrimination, sexual harassment, disabilities and civil rights.
Santos, who also has maintained a private practice in labor and employment law since 1990, earned her juris doctorate in 1983 from the University of Nebraska College of Law. She earned her bachelor's degrees in history and political science in 1976 from Doane College in Crete.
Affirmative Action Director Linda Crump said Santos comes well prepared to her post at the university.
"Alicia has a great history of a lot of experience doing
internal discrimination investigations and she also has a strong
background in training, so she's ready to go with both of these
assignments at the university," Crump said. "She is also well-
respected in (the affirmative action) area at the state and
national levels."
