Banner Committee Report
June 17, 1999, amended September 18, 2000
Introduction
The Banner Committee, including representatives from Facilities Management, Institutional Research and Planning, Landscape Services, and Public Relations, was appointed in January, 1999, to explore the possibilities of placing banners on light poles in strategic locations in order to bring visual attention to the high traffic areas of both campuses and to visually unify City and East Campus as parts of the same whole. The group was also charged with recommending a banner policy to campus units who wish to publicize special events through the use of banners.
Campus Identity Banners
Three locations for the display of Campus Identity Banners have been selected based on their importance as high traffic areas for vehicles or pedestrians and the uniformity of available banner display poles:
- The plaza north of the Nebraska Union on City Campus (10 poles)
- Holdrege Street from 33rd Street to Arbor Drive (14 poles)
- The areas north and west of the Nebraska East Union (8 poles)
A vendor will be selected based on quality of hardware and banner materials for maximum durability for year-round display over an extended period of time.
Banner Policy for Campus Events
Campus Identity Banners could be temporarily removed from specified light poles at the plaza north of the Nebraska Union on City Campus and at the Nebraska East Union in order to display banners for campus events. The following restrictions would apply:
- The event must be sponsored by a college, department, or center. Student organizations are encouraged to consult with staff members at the Nebraska Unions regarding banner and other signage display options.
- The unit must display a minimum of four double-sided banners.
- Banners for only two different special events can be displayed at each Union at any given time. Scheduling will be coordinated by the Manager of Publications & Photography with priority given to events that are of a more university-wide nature or have a greater audience appeal, as well as on a first-come, first-served basis.
- The banners must be displayed for a minimum of two weeks.
- The banner design must be approved in advance by the Manager of Publications & Photography.
- Banners may only be purchased through authorized vendors using approved materials and sizes. Contact Purchasing for information or assistance with your order.
- All costs associated with banner purchase, installation, removal, and storage are the responsibility of the sponsoring unit.
Additional Banner Display Locations
Campus units who are interested in displaying banners on light poles in a location other than those selected for the Campus Identity Banners or hanging temporary banners from buildings must have their requests for scheduling and location approved on a case-by-case basis by the Aesthetic Review Committee. The following considerations should be taken into account.
- Banners are not intended to take the place of building or directional signage.
- Banner designs, materials, and sizes must be compatible with the Campus Identity Banners and the aesthetic of the campus landscape. Banners and hardware may only be purchased through authorized vendors. Banner designs must be approved in advance by the Manager of Publications & Photography.
- A primary consideration for banner display poles is the location of three or more uniform poles in an effective visual arrangement. Units should work with the Director of Landscape Services to identify poles in the desired area.
- Methods of attaching banners to buildings must be approved by the Department of Facilities Management and Planning.
- All costs associated with hardware and banner material purchases, installation, removal, and storage are the responsibility of the sponsoring unit.
At this time, five poles in the area near Kimball Hall, Architecture Hall, and the Sheldon Memorial Gallery have been identified as suitable for an additional banner display location.
