Ron Bonnstetter, a curriculum and instruction professor in the UNL College of Education and Human Sciences, was recognized in 2003 as the Outstanding Science Teacher Educator of the Year by the Association for the Education of Teachers of Science.

The award is based on competency in teaching, development of science teacher education programs, research activities, the development of scientific curricula, leadership in professional organizations related to science education and leadership activities in broader aspects of education and government.

Bonnstetter has been a member of the UNL faculty since 1984 and has established numerous innovative methods of preparing secondary science teachers. Bonnstetter said scientific knowledge and research and the integration of new technologies are important elements of his teaching style. He is also active in service activities outside the classroom. He said future teachers must be prepared to do more than lecture.

"Our science teacher education program is built on the philosophy that we do far more than give information. We're involved in transformation. We're committed to making a difference in how teachers interact with children," said Bonnstetter. One of Bonnstetter's students, Ryan Birge, said he's not surprised his professor won a national award.

"Ron is great. He really helps you find a way to bring science to life in the classroom," said Birge.
