The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is playing a major role in the national celebration of the Lewis and Clark bicentennial. Jeffery Elwell, chair of UNL's Theatre Arts program, is producing one of 15 Lewis and Clark signature events that will be held across the nation in 2004. Elwell's proposal was chosen by the Nebraska Lewis and Clark Bicentennial commission.
"It's exciting to bring history to life," said Elwell. "It's also a great opportunity to show the nation what the University of Nebraska-Lincoln can do."

The signature event, scheduled for July 31 through Aug. 3 at an outdoor theater in Omaha, includes a play, a commissioned musical piece and a Native American dance. The one-act play being written by Chicago playwright Carson Grace Becker focuses on a meeting between Lewis and Clark and the Native Americans who lived in the region. An original concerto by world-renowned composer Philip Glass will be premiered at the Lied Center for Performing Arts next September and a portion of it will be premiered at the summer event. Native Americans from the Otoe-Missouria Tribe will perform a dance created for the occasion.

Auditions for the production will be held in Lincoln, Chicago, New York and the Otoe-Missouria reservation in Oklahoma. The production will also involve UNL students and faculty.

Elwell said 5,000 people will be able to attend the event each night and admission is free. He expects invited guests will include Nebraska's governor, representatives from the White House and the Cabinet and dignitaries from other countries. After the signature event is over, Elwell plans to take the play on tour across the state.

"Hopefully, the event itself will have an impact that will resonate with those who see it, especially the citizens of Nebraska," said Elwell. "I want Nebraskans to realize what an important part this region play in the Lewis and Clark expedition that opened the west and helped create the United States."
