Megan Spilinek, a UNL senior business administration major and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps cadet, has been named a 2003 Truman Scholar.

The honor comes with a $30,000 scholarship - $3,000 for Spilinek's senior year and $27,000 for graduate study - and recognizes her commitment to a career in public service.

Chancellor Harvey Perlman appeared unannounced on March 24 at a gathering of AFROTC students, surprised Spilinek with the news of her win, and presented her with flowers.

The Truman Scholarship Foundation was established by Congress in 1975 as the federal memorial to President Harry S Truman. Spilinek is the 11th Truman Scholar from UNL. Annually, only about 75 students nationwide receive this honor.

"I've had some really good support," Spilinek said. "The Honors Program has some really strong staff that have been mentors to me and encouraged me along the way. And I've met people at ROTC that are very competitive and very incredible, and I push myself to be like them every day."

Last semester Spilinek received the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement, one of only four given annually nationwide, and the second-highest award an Air Force ROTC cadet can achieve.

Spilinek, from Weeping Water, plans to use her Truman scholarship to attend law school and study family advocacy, particularly domestic violence.
