UNL Hosts Baritone Christopher Burchett in a Masterclass
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Voice Area welcomes guest artist Christopher Burchett for a Masterclass. Burchett will present a masterclass for the UNL Voice students on Friday, September 8, 2008 at 3:30 PM in the Westbrook Music Building Room 130. The event is free and open to the public.
Baritone Christopher Burchett gained notice as the Foreman in Janufa with Glimmerglass opera; Leuthold in Guglielmo Tell with Opera Orchestra of New York; Yamadori in Madama Butterfly with Opera Omaha; Bello in la Fanciulla De West with New York City Opera; and Bill Bobstay in H.M.S. Pinafore with Chattanooga Symphony and Opera. He made his Glimmerglass Opera debut with roles in The Good Soldier and in Patience. Other engagements have included returns to Opera Omaha for concerts with Stewart Robertson, including Anthony Davis’s Restless Mourning; and to Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre as Belcore in L’Elisir D’amore. In addition, he was Masetto in Don Juan in Prague, with performances at the Estates National Theater in Prague, and at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
Recent engagements include Falke in Die Fledermaus with Piedmont Opera; Will Wonka in Peter Ash’s The Golden Ticket with American Lyric Theatre; and Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Christmas Carol with the New York Choral Society at Carnegie Hall.
Mr. Burchett’s concert experiences includes engagements with the Boulder Back festival, the New Hampshire Music Festival, the Choral Arts Society of Louisville, the Bethlehem Bach Festival, the Bloomington Choral Arts Society, The Indiana University Orchestra, the Carmel Back Festival, the Palm Beach Opera Orchestra, The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, the Louisville Orchestra, The Louisville Bach Society, The University of Louisville Orchestra and the Louisville Chorus, in such works as Gounod’s St. Cecelia Mass; Beethoven’s 9th symphony; A Sea Symphony, St. Matthew Passion, War Requiem, St. John Passion, Christmas Oratorio, Rameau’s Quam Dilecta, Charpentier’s le Reniement de S. Pierre, The B-minor Mass, Bruckner’s Te Deum, the Lord Nelson Mass, Messiah, The Vaughan Williams Hodie, Fauré’s Requiem and Schubert’s Mass in G.
A recipient of numerous awards, Mr. Burchett has recently been awarded the Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Award from the National Federation of Music Clubs, as well as first place in the American Bach Society/ Bach Choir of Bethlehem Competition, the Virginia Adams Vocal Fellowship, the Anton Guadagno Vocal competition, Priscilla & Dennis Rocco Award, and the National Society of Arts and Letters Career Awards competition Doris Seward Memorial Award. He was also a Metropolitan Opera Regional Finalist and Encouragement Award Winner.
