The Department of Classics and Religious Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is partnering with Angels Theatre Company to present two staged readings of Marina Carr’s Hecuba. Performances will take place on December 2, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Iron Tail Gallery and on December 5, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the university's City Union Ballroom. Talkback sessions will follow the performances, which are free and open to the public.

Location update: the December 5 reading is at the Foundry, 2nd floor Narnia Room.

The readings will feature actors and alumni from the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film in the College of Fine and Performing Arts as well as students and faculty from the department.

Marina Carr’s Hecuba is a modern adaptation of Euripides’ tragedy of the fifth century BCE. It follows Hecuba, the widowed queen of Troy, and how she copes with the gruesome end to her kingdom.

“This is a challenging piece," director Laura Lippman, assistant professor of theatre at Peru State College, said. "Carr’s style lends itself well to the staged reading format, which focuses on the text and characters rather than on sets, costumes, or a full staging of the play’s actions. The audience engages their imagination and sees the action unfold in their mind’s eye.”

Angels Theatre Company is a local, non-profit theater company.  The Hecuba reading is part of their Salon Reading Series. More information can be found at www.angelscompany.org

Nebraska's Department of Classics and Religious Studies offers experiences that stimulate a variety of interests in the ancient world. This presentation is one of a series of events that the student organization, Classics Club, arrange in collaboration with faculty. Other events include the annual fall battle re-enactment and spring Homerathon.
