Archive receives grant to research Whitman's journalism

July 30, 2020

The Walt Whitman Archive has received a $249,941 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to support the collaborative research project “Walt Whitman's Journalism: Finding the Poet in the Brooklyn Daily Times.” Under the direction of Hillegass University Professor and Walt Whitman Archive co-director Kenneth M. Price, the project will employ computational linguistic analysis to search the Brooklyn Daily Times for unattributed journalism authored by Whitman. Price praised his Nebraska colleague Matt Cohen, co-director of the Whitman Archive, and project manager, Kevin McMullen, for their contributions. The project draws on the expertise of collaborators and consultants from seven institutions across the U.S. and beyond.

This is the second NEH grant the Archive has received in 2020 to support its mission and research into Whitman's life and work. For the full list of July 2020 grant recipients, visit the NEH website.
