Anna: A Slave Who Sued for Freedom is a new short film based on the story of an enslaved woman named Ann Williams who filed a petition for her freedom—and won. The film was written by Associate Professor of English Kwakiutl Dreher, produced by Professor of History William G. Thomas III, and directed by Assistant Professor of Practice Michael Burton. It premiered on The Atlantic on Monday, May 1.

“We wanted to tell Anna's story from her perspective and from the perspective of an enslaved person,” said Dreher, “avoiding common tropes and bringing the viewer into her everyday life.”
