Tom Gannon's new memoir, Birding While Indian: A Mixed-Blood Memoir, will be published next month by Mad Creek Books, an imprint of The Ohio State University Press, for their Machete series.

In the book, he explores life as a part-Lakota inhabitant of the Great Plains by recounting over fifty years of childhood walks and adult road trips through observations as an avid birder.

The book series features nonfiction from authors whose writing has been marginalized, ignored, and passed over.

"Thrilled that Machete gets to publish this brainy, funny, wrenching memoir," Joy Castro, series editor and director of the Institute for Ethnic Studies at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, posted on Twitter.

An enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, Gannon is an associate director of the institute and an associate professor of English and ethnic studies. His first book, Skylark Meets Meadowlark, was published in 2009.
