Scott earned his Ph.D. in English from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he specialized in creative writing and served as the Assistant Director of Creative Writing from 2018-2020. His main areas of focus are novel writing and pedagogy, and he has taught classes in composition and literature in addition to all genres of creative writing. He is committed to anti-racist pedagogy, and served for years as Assistant Director of the Pen City Writers Prison Writing Initiative, where he continues to work as a Writing Consultant with incarcerated writers. He earned his M.F.A. from the New Writers Project at the University of Texas at Austin, where he received a Michener Fellowship. Before his degrees, he was the songwriter/lead guitarist for the new wave band New Collisions, which toured with the B-52s, opened for Blondie, and collaborated on its first album with Greg Hawkes of The Cars.
