The Department of Food Science and Technology is dedicated to provide high-quality education and training to graduate students for careers in food science and technology in the food industry, academia, or government. Our program is flexible allowing you to tailor your own individualized program of study to meet your career goals.

Food Science and Technology faculty are located in the Food Innovation Center on Nebraska Innovation Campus (NIC). The Food Innovation Center includes state-of-the-art classrooms, teaching labs, and wet/dry lab research space. It also includes clinical facilities, sensory lab, and pilot plants.

We work closely with The Food Processing Center, Food Allergy Research and Resource Program, Nebraska Food for Health Center, and the UNL Dairy Store as well as industry and government leaders and start-up entrepreneurs.

Graduate Admission Requirements

  • Application for Admission with $50 non-refundable application fee.
  • One set of transcripts.
  • If the student’s native language is not English, verification of English proficiency is required.
  • If International: upload copies of all college- or university-level transcripts or mark sheets (records of courses and marks earned), with certificates, diplomas, and degrees plus certified English translations.

    * Official documents are required from all students who are admitted and enroll. Photocopies of certified records are not acceptable. International students enrolled in other U.S. institutions may have certified copies of all foreign records sent directly to the Office of Graduate Studies by their current school’s registrar office.

  • If applicant is not a US citizen and expects an F or J visa: financial information.
  • Applicants must also fulfill any additional requirements the department specifies at the time of application.

  • Personal Statement: Your statement should include your long-term goals, how graduate study in Food Science and Technology at Nebraska will help you achieve your goals, why you wish to work with the faculty you've chosen, and any additional information you think will help in evaluating your application.

Admission Deadlines

  • December 15 for Priority Fall (August) Admission to be considered for special recruitment fellowships (in addition to assistantship opportunities)
  • February 15 for Fall (August) Admission
  • February 15 for Summer (May) Admission
  • September 15 for Spring (January) Admission
