Every year, graduate students at UNL work to improve their local communities, support other students at UNL, and do great work for their professional organizations. Here are some of the things our graduate students have been up to this year.
Service to their Departments and the University
GSA Service and Departmental/University Committees
Many students currently serve as ASUN GSA representatives or departmental GSA leaders including:
- Jennifer Andersen (Sociology) served as NASGS Teaching Work Group Co-Coordinator, NASGS President (2018-2019), and the Sociology GSA Representative.
- Moh'd-Eslam Dahdolan (Architectural Engineering) served as the ASUN GSA representative for Architectural Engineering during which he served as the Graduate Travel Awards Program Committee Chair and advocated to have the Omaha engineering graduate students getting more involved in GSA and GSA activities.
- Trenton Haltom is President of the Nebraska Association for Sociology Graduate Students (NASGS).
- Connor Hines is the Secretary for the Biochemistry Graduate Student Association which has been working on establishing mentoring and outreach opportunities with the Undergraduate Biochemistry department. Earlier this semester, he facilitated a tour of the Buan lab for the undergraduates of our department.
- Ninaad Lasrado (Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences) is a GSA representative and serve as a committee member on GTAP travel awards program.
- Markéta Poděbradská served as Social Chair for the Natural Resources GSA.
- Haipeng Zhang is president of the Mechanical and Materials Engineering GSA.
Maria Natalia Acosta Canchila (Psychology) served as a Graduate Student Member in the Diversity Committee of the Psychology Department.
Haolin Fu (Management) is the Graduate Student Association Representative for the department and served as a member of the CARMA Research Methods Education Program Assessment Committee.
Ashley Garcia (Communication Studies) is a graduate student member of the Women's & Gender Studies' Advisory Board and a member of the Communication Studies' Graduate Student Recruitment Committee.
Robert Hall (Communication Studies) served as the Graduate Representative for the University-Wide Teaching Council, reviewing nominations for various awards and discussing future actions for the committee. He was also the Graduate Student Representative for Communication Studies aiding in recruitment and promotion of the department at National and Regional conferences.
Taylor Hamblin (Educational Studies) was elected as the new Editor-in-Chief of the Nebraska Educator journal. Graduate students manage this journal and only publish the work of UNL graduate students. They hope to give graduate students opportunities to publish their research and theories, as well as gain experience in the publishing process.
Nicholas Harp (Psychology) serves as the President of the Psychology Department's Graduate Student Association. He also helped coordinate graduate student participation during a recent hiring search, as well as summarizing and presenting graduate student feedback about the candidates. He also worked closely with the VP of their departmental GSA, Elise Thayer, to assess graduate student perceptions of the department climate and am currently working with faculty to address graduate student concerns. He also serves on the UNL Graduate Student Assembly as the Psychology Department's representative and it's Diversity and Inclusion subcommittee helping to address concerns of UNL's diverse student body. He also serves on the Chancellor's Commission for the Status of Gender and Sexual Identity and two subcommittees: the programming committee and the student committee organizing back-to-school events for LGBTQ+ students, staff, and faculty, as well as representing the commission at the graduate student welcome back fair.
J. Kyle Haws (Psychology) has served on department committees for interview weekend and diversity weekend.
Erica Hopkins (Mathematics) has been the graduate student representative on the campus Academic Integrity Committee during the academic year 2018-2019 and is currently co-chairing this committee.
P. Citlally Jimenez (Natural Resources) served as graduate student representative in departmental committees: Natural Resources Diversity and Inclusion & Faculty Graduate Student Committee and served as graduate student representative in drafting an Advisor-Graduate Agreement to encourage efficient and healthy working relationships. She was also Vice President for departmental Graduate Student Association.
Andrea Johnson (Sociology) currently serves on the College Appeals Committee.
Trevor Kauer (Communication Studies) reviewed UNL graduate student travel award applications.
Moriah Locklear (Chemistry) was a member of the Teaching Council, CCSW Student Council Chair, Phi Lambda Upsilon President, Chemistry Day Tour Guide, ACS Chair and Chair-Elect for UNL's Chapter, and Science Olympiad Judge.
Ipsita Mitra (Earth and Atmospheric Sciences) volunteered to welcome new students at the Big Red Welcome and faculty at the New Faculty Orientation.
Tammera J Mittelstet (Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education) has served as a member and contributor to UNL TLTE STEM Integration Block Development Committee working with a team of TLTE Faculty-Dr. Amanda Thomas, Dr. Julie Thomas, and Dr. Guy Trainin and graduate student instructors to develop the STEM block for our elementary education undergraduates.
Toni Morgan (Communication Studies) serves on her departmental undergraduate education committee.
Agustin Olivo is the current president of the Biological Systems Engineering Graduate Students Association; running two monthly meetings for officers and members of the organization, and coordinating the planning and execution of professional development, fundraising and social events. He is also a member of the CASNR Student Advisory Board, the CASNR Curriculum Committee, and the UNL Graduate Student Assembly, representing the department of Biological Systems Engineering. Within GSA, he participates in the professional development committee. This fall, he participated as a speaker for the orientation panel for incoming graduate students at UNL, carried out by the UNL Office of Graduate Studies and also participated as a speaker in the beginning of the semester at the CASNR Annual Faculty and Staff meeting, sharing my experience as a Fulbright Scholar when I first came to UNL (during my undergraduate program), and now as a graduate student.
Rubi Quiñones (Computer Science and Engineering) is a reviewer for the Graduate Tavel Grants program at UNL, member of the Council for Resilience Education at UNL where our objective is provide free publishable education on ecological resilience. She is also president of the Bangladesh Student Association at UNL where our goal is to provide a safe transition for Bangladeshi students to America and to celebrate Bangaldeshi culture and tradition with the Lincoln community. .
Falah Rashoka (Nutrition and Health Sciences) is the department representative at Graduate Student Assembly (GSA)
Ashley Mulcahy Toney (Nutrition and Health Sciences) is part of the First Generation Nebraska Advisory Board.
Zach Wrublewski (Philosophy) maintains his department website, serves as graduate student representative to the department, and organizes weekly teaching colloquia to mentor new graduate teaching assistants and share ideas about teaching with other instructors and teaching assistants.
Mentoring of undergraduates
Hundreds of graduate students at UNL are involved in mentoring UCARE students, McNair Scholars, and other undergraduate researchers. Trenton Haltom (Sociology), J. Kyle Haws (Psychology), Mohammad Mazharul Islam (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering), P. Citlally Jimenez (Natural Resources), Andrea Johnson (Sociology), Samuel Koeshall (Agronomy), Rubi Quinones (Computer Science and Engineering), Haipeng Zhang (Mechanical and Materials Engineering) all reported mentoring students in their labs. Several talked more specifically about their mentoring work. Robert Hall (Communication Studies) mentored and will be taking 8 students from a Family Communication Course to the Flat Water States Communication Conference in Wayne, NE this upcoming Spring to present their original research. Katherine Hazen (Psychology) supervised students UCARE (summer and academic year) and mentored three undergraduate theses. Ashley Mulcahy Toney (Nutrition and Health Sciences) assisted two students to apply for UCARE and now mentors them in the lab.

Mazbahul G. Ahamad (Natural Resources) and Mohammad Mazharul Islam (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) joined many others in judging posters at the 2019 Nebraska Summer Research Symposium.
Daniel Rico (Computer Science and Engineering) and Mohammad Mazharul Islam (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) provided feedback to McNair Scholars on their presentations at the Annual McNair Summer Colloquium.
Sara El Alaoui (Computer Science and Engineering), Moriah Locklear (Chemistry) and many other graduate students reviewed the hundreds of UCARE applications received yearly.
Devra Hock (Geology) worked on jump-starting our local Association for Women Geoscientists (AWG) chapter to create a space for local, student, and faculty geoscientists to come together on a regular basis. The AWG Cornhusker Chapter sponsors departmental happy hours after weekly guest seminar speakers, and has brought in two AWG speakers this semester.
Elizabeth Carlson and Nicole Buczkowski (Mathematics) both were involved in SCUDEM (Student Competition Using Differential Equations Modeling). Nicole recruited and trained one UNL team while Elizabeth recruited and trained two other teams that represented UNL at the competition. Elizabeth also trained a team of three that represented UNL at the international Math Contest in Modeling (MCM). The MCM team placed in the top 7% out of 25,370 teams representing 1523 institutions.
Jeffrey Ifland (Computer Science and Engineering) is the volunteer coach for the programming teams in the ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Competition). He also a member of the committee for the local site of the competition.
Ashley Mulcahy Toney (Nutrition and Health Sciences) received the UNL Graduate Luminary Award.
Supporting Undergraduates and Department Initiatives
Austin Eide (Mathematics) is one of two graduate students starting an undergraduate directed reading program at UNL in the spring 2020 semester. All the preparation and organization has been done in fall 2019. This program will help fill in some gaps in the undergraduate curriculum that could not be covered by the regularly offered courses and will help strengthen undergraduates' records for graduate program applications.
Jeffrey Ifland (Computer Science and Engineering) helped undergraduate students organize and get started a service student organization originally called “CSE Ambassadors”, and now called “Initialize”.
Andrea Johnson (Sociology) served on the undergraduate panel for NUSS (Nebraska Undergraduate Sociological Symposium), traveling to Kearney, Crete and Fremont, respectively, to talk to potential graduate students about the grad school process.
Ninaad Lasrado (Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences) mentored DVM students in Immunology.
Molly Lee (Computer Science and Engineering) was on the Student Panel, gave a tour of the MBiTe Lab, and went to dinner with the prospective graduate students at our department’s Graduate Student Visit Day.
Tammera J Mittelstet (Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education) has served as a capstone reviewer, evaluating our TLTE students capstones each semester providing an opportunity to reflect on the department's development of the next generation of teachers.
Agustin Olivo (Biological Systems Engineering) volunteered as a "Global Ambassador Leader" for the 2019 UNL Argentina Friends of Fulbright program, organized by the Office of Global Strategies. In this position, I helped coordinate a group of ten UNL graduate and undergraduate students to facilitate networking opportunities with Argentinian Fulbright students, and organized social and cultural events for the exchange students.
Channing C. Stellato (Chemistry) mentored MRSEC RET high school teacher (Emily Schaefer) in the Summer (6 weeks per year).

Katherine Hazen (Psychology) reviewed conference proposals for APA Div 41 and reviews APA conference 2020 proposals for APA Div 8 (Society for Personality and Social Psychology). She is also a student reviewer for Law and Human Behavior.
Mohammad Mazharul Islam (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) has been an expert reviewer of the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute.

Jennifer Andersen (Sociology) has served as Minority Scholars Committee Member for the Midwest Sociological Society, First Generation Scholars Volunteer for the Midwest Sociological Society, Session Organizer for the Midwest Sociological Society, and First-Generation and Working Class Persons in Sociology volunteer.
Moh'd-Eslam Dahdolan (Architectural Engineering) was the Student ASHRAE President in 2019 and worked to get undergraduate students more involved in Student ASHRAE and Nebraska ASHRAE through events on and off campus such as industry panels, presentations, and social events like "Bowling Night" and "Cupcakes and Ducts".
Alexa Davis (Natural Resources) served as Student Moderator at the Soil and Water Conservation Society conference helping facilitate and coordinate conference presentations.
Robert Hall (Communication Studies) served as the Secretary for the Great Ideas for Teaching Students Interest Group at the Central States Communication Association, will be serving as the Vice Chair for this interest group in 2020, and served as a Nominating Committee Member for both the Basic Course Division and the Master's Education Section of the National Communication Association.
Trenton Haltom (Sociology) is the Chair and Council Member for the Committee on Social Media, Social Problems, the official journal for the Society for the Study of Social Problems Graduate Student Representative, Mentorship Sub-Committee, Student Concerns Committee (two-year term), Sex and Gender Section of the American Sociological Association, and Student Advisory Board Member for Social Problems, the official journal for the Society for the Study of Social Problems. He also served as Managing Editor, special issue “Geographies of Sexualities” for Journal of Lesbian Studies guest edited by Dr. Emily Kazyak and was Co-Editor with Nicole Bedera “Sexual Violence” (Virtual Issue), Social Problems the official journal for the Society for the Study of Social Problems.
Katherine Hazen (Psychology) served as Campus Representative to APA Div 41 (American Psychology-Law Society).
Devra Hock (Earth and Atmospheric Sciences) started serving on the Association for Women Geoscientists Board of Directors as the alternate and moved to full regional delegate in August for the North-Central region (IA, IL, IN, MI, MN, MO, NE, OH, WI) assisting local chapters within North-Central region, fielding new chapter requests and presenting chapter reports for the North-Central region at the Fall BOD Meeting and discuss future strategic plans for AWG.
Su Ji Hong (Mathematics) has been co-leader of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) student chapter running three different events for graduate students during the year, including the annual AMS student chapter colloquium for which they managed to get a member of the Institute for Advanced Studies and Princeton University to speak. She also co-wrote a successful application to obtain funding through AMS and the special programs grants program at UNL for the graduate student chapter.
P. Citlally Jimenez (Natural Resources) is serving as part of logistics team in planning UNL's Science Communication Conference in 2020.
Trevor Kauer (Communication Studies) was elected to the NCA Student Section Executive Board.
Tammera J Mittelstet (Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education) has been appointed to the ASTE Professional Development Committee as a Graduate Student Representative.
Rubi Quiñones (Computer Science and Engineering) was a graduate mentor for the Computing Research Association - Women (CRA-W).
Wiliam Sipe (Communication Studies) serves as the secretary of the SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) caucus at the Central States Communication Association.
Channing C. Stellato (Chemistry) was the co-chair of the UNL 2019 Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physical Sciences (WoPhyS).
Ashley Mulcahy Toney (Nutrition and Health Sciences) was selected to become an American Society for Nutrition Student Interest Group Board Member where she will help coordinate events targeted towards graduate students at the Nutrition 2020 conference.
Haipeng Zhang (Mechanical Engineering) is the co-organizer for FEDSM2020 (ASME conference).
Service to their Communities
The Empowerment Initiative in the Department of Educational Psychology includes 14 graduate students and Dr. Susan Swearer who have partnered with Lincoln Public Schools, as well as other school districts in Nebraska, to implement the Target Bullying Involvement Program (T-BIP) for over ten years. The T-BIP is a free individualized program for students ages 7 to 18 years old who are involved in bullying, primarily through perpetration, although a number of students have also experienced victimization (i.e., bully-victims). It is a one-on-one, three-hour cognitive-behavioral intervention tailored to specific student referrals. The T-BIP specialists who carry out the intervention are graduate students in the Empowerment Initiative Lab who help uncover and address involvement in bullying, as well as provide specific recommendations informed by assessments of underlying factors (e.g., depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, cognitive distortions, empathic skills, etc.). Recommendations are aimed at stopping bullying involvement and restoring positive relationships. Dr. Swearer and Empowerment Initiative Lab graduate students have trained hundreds of school staff across the state in how to implement the T-BIP in their schools. Furthermore, Empowerment Initiative graduate students have partnered with numerous individual schools and organizations (e.g., after school clubs, youth groups, individual classrooms) to present information about bullying involvement. These presentations are geared towards educating students about the different forms bullying can take, how to respond when they see bullying happening or what to do if they experience bullying victimization, as well as what to do if they are involved in bullying as a perpetrator.
Devra Hock (Geology) taught an applied science workshop at Camp Summergold, an all-girls (middle and high school ages) STEAM summer camp in July. She discussed sustainability and helped girls create a plastic calculator and tracker plan and brought in an aerial lyra and hammock from local aerial gym (Big Top Performance Arts Center) to teach applied physics.
Sydney James (Civil Engineering) is a mentor for Mid-America Transportation Center Roads, Rails, and Racecars, an engineering afterschool program for Lincoln middle school students as well as tribal students at the Omaha Nation and Winnebago, and mentor for Mid-America Transportation Center Sovereign Native Youth STEM Leadership Academy, a 7 day summer camp program for Native students in Nebraska where they are able to explore STEM careers and learn how important it is for Native people to be leaders. Based on these experiences she was a panelist for the Mid-America Transportation Center Scholars Program speaking to students who are attending 2 year tribal schools about the importance of attending a 4 year college and the many resources available to them.
Courtney Keiser (Mechanical and Materials Engineering) was the activities coordinator for a society of women engineers outreach event at UNO with the professional section of the society of women engineers called Wow! That's Engineering! It was a full day event to provide young people a hands on opportunity to explore different careers in engineering and technology and she contacted industry members and arranging activities for them to host at the event, organizing the scheduling and paperwork for the activities, and presenting a talk over the lunch hour on her own research. About 80 kids and parents attended.
Tammera J. Mittelstet (Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education) has served as Southeast Regional Science Fair Assistant Coordinator for several years and works with Dr. Julie Thomas and Committee to coordinate the Southeast Regional Science Fair each spring for the students of our area.
Agustin Olivo (Biological Systems Engineering) has given presentations and coordinated activities for students from Pierce High School (Pierce, NE), Johnson-Brock High School (Johnson, NE), and Ogallala High School (Ogallala, NE), about soil health and on-farm research, as a part of his research and extension project. He has also participated of the nationwide program called "Skype a Scientist", through which he delivered a presentation via Skype about science and research to 2nd grade students in an elementary school in Illinois, USA.
Markéta Poděbradská (Natural Resources) taught a water and drought outreach activity for science class at Irving Middle School in Lincoln.
Falah N. Rashoka (Nutrition and Health Sciences) worked under Dr. Megan Kelley's supervision on developing an educational plan included evidence-based intervention strategies focusing primarily on "Obesity, Diabetes, and Heart Disease" and on "Hypertension and Mental Health" for the Asian Community Center. All educational materials were provided to community cultural centers across Lincoln city so they can use it with a different populations in the future and will hopefully help in reduce morbidity and mortality rates in the city. Furthermore, we developed the "Easy to Use" app contains a literature review about chronic disease, so it will be easy to take health information from it by health educator in community centers. They also formed community advisory board composed of community members, health care providers, and members of community centers who work with immigrants to develop an educational plan to help the Yezidi community and other immigrants communities better access to the health care in city and all the United States. She also developed a webinar for five minute presentation about the prevention of heart disease and a brochure with pictures about the effects of industrial waste and gas-burning when oil products on the environment and how that affected animals in the Middle East and had been posted at the college of public health at UNMC.
Daniel Rico (Computer Science and Engineering) gave a presentation to Grand Island Senior High School - Engineering and Technology Academy on the topic of "daring to dream" related to his own journey through his undergrad and now graduate degree to inspire others to pursue college and beyond.
Community Service Work
Kelti Barcelow (Architecture) volunteers with the College View Trailblazers Pathfinder Club.
Alec Burk, William Eberhart, and Andrew Rose, (Architecture) all volunteered for the People's City Mission's Starry Nights event that serves as both a way to say “thank you” to people who support the People’s City Mission and a big fundraiser to help them help others. They noted that they chose to help the People’s City Mission because they do so much for the impoverished community in Lincoln and being a college student with not a lot of money, donating time is the best way they can help.
Taylor Hamblin (TLTE) has been working with Nebraska's National History Day staff to help with coordinating the state judging event. Middle school and high school students from around Nebraska will travel to Lincoln to have their history projects judged.
Andrew Hanna (Management) serves Christmas meals at the Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach.
Nicholas Harp (Psychology) works with OutNebraska, a local non-profit, helping to organize legal name change clinics for transgender and gender diverse individuals, as a part of his position in the Chancellor's Commission on the Status of Gender and Sexual Identity. He meets with lawyers and legal groups regularly to help fund and serve this group of people and is the founding president of University of Nebraska's chapter of the National Organization for Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals, an LGBTQ+ Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math organization, and attended OutNebraska's events (e.g., Pride in the Park) representing the student group.
J. Kyle Haws (Psychology) volunteers with the YMCA and offers translation services.
Jeffrey Ifland (Computer Science and Engineering) helps run two scout units (one geared towards grade school aged youth, and the other geared towards middle and high school aged youth) and volunteer with the council (training committee, climbing and core committee). He is also a volunteer ski patroller on two ski patrols in the area (one alpine, the other cross country), providing outdoor emergency care, transportation, and search and rescue services.
Sydney James (Civil Engineering) serves a volunteer for Ski for Light as a downhill ski guide for visually and mobility impaired people.
P Citlally Jimenez (Natural Resources) conducted environmental education workshops in Lincoln and Seward, NE
Andrea Johnson (Sociology) serves as the Volunteer Director of Launch Leadership, a nonprofit that seeks to empower young leaders to transform their communities and change our world. Launch serves over 1,000 middle school and high school students per year. She has volunteered for the organization the past 14 years, but served in this volunteer capacity for the past 3. As the Volunteer Director, she helped recruit, select, train, recognize and educate our staff of over 300 professionals, ranging from UNL students to CEOs to lawyers to teachers. She won the Lux Award this past summer, an award presented annually to a member of the Launch Volunteer Staff in recognition of outstanding long-term contributions to promoting youth leadership in Nebraska.
Ninaad Lasrado (Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences) volunteered as a mentor for Make a Difference, an organization that works for the development of underprivileged kids.
Ipsita Mitra (Earth and Atmospheric Sciences) led the student earthquake workshops at Dinosaurs & Disaster event where she explained and demonstrated how earthquakes are generated by model simulations to children to ignite curiosity in Earth Science. She also delivered a presentation at Genoa Indian Boarding school in Nance County on the importance of preservation of oral Histories of native Americans.
Agustin Olivo (Biological Systems Engineering) is a member of Global Shapers Community (Hub in Córdoba, Argentina), a World Economic Forum’s organization for young leaders world-wide. Within this organization, he currently leads a project to improve the access of high school students from small towns in Córdoba, Argentina to the University.
Markéta Poděbradská (Natural Resources) served as site coordinator for Community Crops in the Peter Pan Park .
Daniel Rico (Computer Science and Engineering) works as a volunteer tutor for kids and adults at the People City Mission most weekdays from 5pm-9pm and volunteers at at Bryan Health East Geriatrics ward on weekends.
