How would a Money Coaching Session benefit me?

Financial coaches help you gain the knowledge and skills you need to successfully manage your financial life. Sessions are focused on the areas of immediate interest to the individual. Thus, no two sessions are alike. However, financial coaches focus on helping you achieve a successful financial life.

Who can schedule a Money Coaching Session?

Any member of the UNL community can schedule an appointment with us, including:
  • Undergraduate students
  • Graduate/Professional students
  • UNL alumni
  • UNL staff
  • UNL faculty

What kinds of topics can money coaches help me with?

Problem-Solving Sessions
  • Making and sticking to a spending plan (budget)
  • Creating and planning for financial goals (study abroad, spring break, etc.)
  • Getting organized with your finances
  • Making a plan to repay debt
  • Planning for major purchases (car, house, etc.)
Financial Education Sessions
  • Learning how to establish credit (credit scores & credit reports)
  • Learning about credit & debit cards
  • Basic investing education/ retirement planning
  • Questions about financial aid & student loans
  • Questions about employee benefits

What can money coaches NOT help me with?

Money coaches cannot do the following:

  • Do financial tasks for you
  • Make financial decisions for you
  • Sell financial products or services during sessions
  • Venture into money management education areas beyond the scope of the UNL Student Money Management Center

Is there any charge for Money Coaching Session?

No, all services offered by Student Money Management are free of charge for UNL students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Who will I talk to during a Money Coaching Session?

You will meet with a SMM coach who has completed financial education and coaching training.

Are Money Coaching Sessions confidential?

Sessions are completely confidential. Coaches will never tell anyone else that you came in for a session unless you want us to.

Where are Money Coaching Sessions held?

After you make an appointment, you and your designated SMM coach will meet at the appointment date/time in the Big Red Resilience & Well-Being office, room 127 in the University Health Center.

What if I can't come to the office for an appointment?

Feel free to schedule an appointment if you would like a phone session, or call or email us with any money questions you may have.

How do I schedule an appointment for a Money Coaching Session?

If you are a UNL student, faculty, or staff, click here to choose a financial coach, and the date and time that work best for you. If you do not have access to MyPlan (through Canvas), please contact us to schedule an appointment.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?

You can cancel through the confirmation email that you received after you scheduled your appointment, or you can call us at 402.472.8770

What should I bring to my Money Coaching Session?

You can bring anything that you think will help us help you. This could include:

  • Bank account statements
  • Credit card statements
  • Loan information
  • A list of your expenses and income

What if I meet with a money coach and I have a problem they cannot help me with?

If students need more in depth financial help than a money coach can provide, referrals can be provided for other services. If the student is experiencing psychological, behavioral or situational problems, such as family issues or a gambling habit, they will be referred to the appropriate professional.

How often do I need to meet with my money coach?

You should meet with your money coach until you are confident that you have the knowledge and skills to successfully manage your financial life. Simply schedule another appointment if you need more help or have more questions. Please let us know if you would like to meet with a specific SMM coach. You can schedule refresher sessions throughout your college career to make sure that you stay on the right path to financial success.
