UNL’s Women’s & Gender Studies program offers flexible, interdisciplinary learning, and an in-depth analysis of women, gender, and sexuality. With course offerings from more than 15 academic fields, our program introduces you to exciting ideas, dynamic professors and classmates, and feminist thought and perspectives in small, collaborative learning communities.

When you major in Women’s & Gender Studies, your core classes will include Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies; Feminist Theories, Feminists’ Perspectives; and a Senior Seminar. You may also choose to combine your major with another field, such as English, History, Journalism, Political Science, Psychology or Sociology. In addition, you can elect to take courses like Gender and Communication, Women in Popular Culture, Philosophy of Feminism, Psychology of Gender or Women in Contemporary Society.

Women's and Gender Studies Major

To earn a WGS major, students must take 36 hours of WGS courses that satisfy the following requirements:

  • Required Core  (9 hours)
    WMNS 101 Introduction  to Women’s & Gender Studies
    WMNS 400 Senior Seminar
    WMNS 485 Feminist Theories, Feminists’ Perspectives
  • WGS History Courses       (6 hours)
  • WGS Literature/Rhetoric and other Humanities Courses                                    (6 hours)
  • WGS Social Sciences Courses (6 hours)
  • WGS Diversity (6 hours)
  • WGS 300-level or above      (12 hours)

  • WGS History Courses       (3 hours)
  • WGS Literature/Rhetoric and other Humanities Courses (3 hours)
  • WGS Social Sciences Courses (3 hours)
  • WGS Diversity (3 hours)
  • WGS 300-level or above  (6 hours)

LGBTQ/Sexuality Studies Minor

To earn a LGBTQ/Sexuality Studies minor, students must take 18 hours that satisfy the following requirements:

  • WMNS 201 Introduction to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Sexuality Studies  (3 hours)
  • At least 6 hours from List A
  • At least 6 hours of courses at the 400 level, with at least 3 hours from List A
  • Courses from at least 3 different departments
