UNL’s Women’s & Gender Studies program offers flexible, interdisciplinary learning, and an in-depth analysis of women, gender, and sexuality. With course offerings from more than 15 academic fields, our program introduces you to exciting ideas, dynamic professors and classmates, and feminist thought and perspectives in small, collaborative learning communities.

When you major in Women’s & Gender Studies, your core classes will include Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies; Feminist Theories, Feminists’ Perspectives; and a Senior Seminar. You may also choose to combine your major with another field, such as English, History, Journalism, Political Science, Psychology or Sociology. In addition, you can elect to take courses like Gender and Communication, Women in Popular Culture, Philosophy of Feminism, Psychology of Gender or Women in Contemporary Society.

Women's and Gender Studies Major

To earn a WGS Major students may pursue either:

Option A:
36 hours from required courses and course listings
OR
Option B: 30 hours from required courses and course listings, and at least 18 hours in a related minor.

All majors must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Required Core Courses (9 hours)
    WMNS 101 Introduction to Women’s & Gender Studies
    WMNS 400 Senior Seminar
    WMNS 485 Feminist Theories, Feminists’ Perspectives
  • History Courses (6 hours)
  • Literature/Rhetoric and other Humanities Courses (6 hours)
  • Social Sciences Courses (6 hours)
  • Electives (3-9 hours)

Women's and Gender Studies Minor

To earn a WGS minor, students must take 18 hours of courses in the WGS program, including:

  • WMNS 101 Introduction to
    Women’s & Gender Studies 
  • History Courses (3 hours)
  • Literature/Rhetoric and other Humanities Courses (3 hours)
  • Social Sciences Courses (3 hours)
  • Electives (3-6 hours)

LGBTQ/Sexuality Studies Minor

To earn a LGBTQ/Sexuality Studies minor, students must take 18 hours of courses, including:

  • WMNS 201 Introduction to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Sexuality Studies
  • At least 6 hours from List A
  • At least 6 hours of courses at the 400 level, with at least 3 hours from List A
  • Courses from at least 3 different departments
