In this course, we will examine science (i.e., the systematic study of the natural and social world) from a feminist perspective. Explore feminist critiques of scientific theories and practices, and approaches to understanding and conducting science. Discuss specific challenges facing women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, including stereotypes, bias, discrimination, harassment and violence. Students will also learn about women who have made significant contributions to a wide range of science fields.

My favorite part of teaching this course is the interview project. Students will work on an interview project over the course of the semester. The project is comprised of five separate assignments, which each build on one another. Students will have the opportunity to interview a woman working in STEM/social science field at UNL. Students will get to learn more about women’s current contributions to scientific disciplines, and how the diversity of women’s identities, views, and experiences shape their lives and work.
